MOON OVER CHICAGO
What a fun read! Fulton (Full) Moon is a shoe cobbler like none you've ever seen. He doesn't take kindly to threats and has a contagious curiosity. When a supposedly battered wife comes to him for protection, little does he know that her husband, who owns a flower shop and a multitude of exotic cars as a front, is a tough guy with tougher friends. It gets worse and worse, as he is beaten up and his livelihood in the shoe repair shop, Moonshines, is threatened by the angry husband. The seemingly vulnerable gangster's wife has entrusted him with something that could blow the lid off and when she wants it back, we find out that we shouldn't trust first impressions. J.D. writes in a funny, tongue-in-cheek style that is reminiscent of 1940's mystery series like Phillip Marlowe. It is a joy from front to back and leaves you wanting to read another of his books.
HER NAME IS MOMMY
Jan Lutovsky’s Christmas shopping trip takes a terrifying turn of events when a menacing stranger uses her own limo to kidnap her. Her little daughter huddles on a nearby bench, hidden by her mother’s packages, until she is noticed by Private Investigator Mike Shepherd and his girlfriend Diana. The ransom demand is huge. An arrogant, inept FBI agent infuriates Jan’s husband, wealthy developer and entrepreneur, enough that he hires Mike to investigate the kidnapping and find his wife. That’s when the games begin. Can Mike outwit the diabolical kidnapper and save Jan’s life? Can Jan save herself? And the question arises…why Jan? Mike finds himself in as perilous a situation as his client’s wife. Will either of them survive? As always, J. D. Webb delivers a well-written novel that keeps you turning the pages. If you want to find the answers to the questions, you’ll have to read the book!
SHEPHERD'S PIE
With Shepherd’s Pie, J.D. Webb dishes up a deliciously enticing concoction. Part cat-and-mouse thriller, part tongue-in-cheek send up of the tough P.I. genre, Webb’s story is chock full of genuine thrills and hilarious tidbits. His tough and terse fiction might easily brand him as the Mickey Spillane of the Midwest. Give him a try. I think you’ll find yourself quickly hooked by this tasty offering.
REVIEW BY NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING AUTHOR William Kent Krueger
SMUDGE
When Trish Morgan decides to stop at her ATM for a little ready cash to cover breakfast with the girls the next day, she has no idea what awaits her. It’s raining, and as luck would have it, the light over the ATM is out. Noticing a dark smudge on the ATM screen, she wipes it off, only to discover that it is sticky. Taking a closer look, she realizes the smudge is blood. Then she hears what sounds like a moaning in the alley near the bank. And her nightmare begins. Entering the alley, she sees a woman in distress lying in a pool of blood, obviously using her last breath in a desperate attempt to summon help. Although Trish calls 911, it is too late. But it isn’t the end of the incident. For Trish…it’s just the beginning! From that moment, she’s in extreme jeopardy and it’s coming at her from all directions. She turns to the only person she thinks she can depend on, her best friend Heather, who has recently completed a P.I. course and can’t wait to use her gun. In fact, she tries to convince Trish to carry a piece as well. But that’s not the right solution, considering the dangerous players in this game. After Trish heard the sound in the alley next to the bank, life as she knew it changed. She unwittingly has what the killers want, and they will stop at nothing to get it. To make matters worse, trouble is afoot in her marriage and other complications are developing. Everything seems to be crashing in on her at the same time. The only person in her life who actually appears to be stable is her old high school boyfriend…a man she has had no contact with for years, who also happens to be the police officer assigned to protect her. On top of everything else, she finds herself fighting the obvious attraction they are feeling for each other. Hold on to your hat, because Webb has done it again with a tale that keeps the reader turning the pages. Don’t forget to make sure the windows and doors are locked. To tell you any more, would give away the twists and turns in the plot…and we wouldn’t want to do that, would we?
INCREDIBLE WITNESS
5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories, plus a lot of dry humor Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022 Verified Purchase
An enjoyable batch of stories, each a fairly quick read. I like the author's dry wit, and especially like the story, "Stuck in Valhalla." A great twist near the end. This would be a good book to have on your nightstand. Read a story before bed each night.
BAYOU CHASE
Elaine L. Orr (Elaine L. Orr has authored more than thirty books and is known for using genuine dialogue to bring characters to life. Thank you for taking the time to review my book-it's an honor. JD Webb) 5.0 out of 5 stars
Strong hero and a solid plot Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023 Chase is griefstricken and out for vengence -- since he couldn't get justice for the death of his wife. But retribution isn't its own reward in his case, and he makes plans to protect those he loves from two killers who are coming after him. The bayou has more deadly enemies than long-bellied reptiles.
Tawnya 5.0 out of 5 stars Creative Writing That Will Question Your Integrity Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2023 Verified Purchase
I am not one to write reviews on books but I will make an exception for Bayou Chase. Forgive me for not writing in a formal format. From the very beginning of this book you are drawn into the authors description of an attack that seems to be warranted. You feel for the wife who did nothing wrong and is subjected to a horrific scene with a man that has no boundaries. What would a husband do in this circumstance? I know what we would all like to do but is it the right thing to do and what are the consequences of those actions? I know that I looked forward to each page turn. I wasn't always rooting for the main character but I was intrigued and curious as to what would happen next. I really liked the authors style of writing. I also liked that the author didn't fill a lot of pages with unnecessary content just to add 100 pages to his novel. I would definitely recommend this book. However, do not start reading it right before bedtime. You will want to finish it in one sitting.
